The "Thunderbolt" Destroyer Class

As the Republic of Near Earth Orbitals grew in importance during the Universal century, the need for a sturdy and inexpensive defense vessel appeared. The Thunderbolt class was the answer. Thunderbolts are now quite common in the Orbital Navy. The forty-one existing ships are divided almost equally between the three Orbital Republic Divisions, L1 having fifteen, L3 twelve and L5 the remaining fourteen.

The ship's overall design is a departure from the standard Orbital design philosophy. The lack of exo-armor bays as well as the low reaction mass reserve somewhat reduces the ship's survivability, although the armament is heavier than what one would expect on such a small vessel.
